Q: How much will it cost? A: Learning to fly can be expensive. You will need to pay for the plane, instructor time(I charge $40 per hour), books, your medical exam and your written and practical test fees. I recommend budgeting between $7000 and $10000 for your private pilot certificate,if you train in a Cessna 172. You can reduce the cost by flying more than once a week and by studying hard on your own.
Q: Do you rent planes? A: No I don't but there is a Cessna 150 ($65) for rent at Fredericksburg and 2 Cessna 172s($105 and $110) available at Kerrville . These prices are hourly "wet" rates meaning they include the fuel and are charged from the time the engine is started until the time it is stopped. You can also get a better rate if you prepay 10hr blocks. You can find out more in the
Airports pages
Q: Where do I get my medical? A: You will need to see an approved Aviation Medical Examiner. Although a medical certificate is not required until you fly solo it is a good idea to obtain it as soon as possible to avoid wasting time and money if there is a problem. I use Ray Smith in Fredericksburg.
Click here to find the one closest to you Q: Do I need to be a US citizen to start flight training? A: No, anyone can flight train. However non US citizens must get approval from the Transportation Security Administration first. I can help you through the process. US citizens must prove citizenship by presenting a valid passport or birth certificate and photo ID. If this sounds like a pain don't blame me, blame the terrorists.
Q: Is it true that becoming a pilot make you more attractive? A: Yes! It was proved by a NASA study.
